Tea break

I slack off today.
I am probably writing about this architecture tomorrow.

Barcelona#3

It was cold today.
It’s already the end of autumn?
This morning, feeling somewhat chilly wind,
I remembered my university’s day.
At that time, I belonged to a cycling club.

On the way home this evening,
pedaling against to strong wind,
I also remembered my cycling days.
That brings back memories.

Anyway, today, I’ll take a break from Gaudi.
I haven’t put a photo in which a person is, have I.?
I’ll do that.

Although I decided the date of this trip without checking any events before,
I came across a festival on the street by chance.
Several dolls of giants were walking though main street.
The giants are called “Gegants” in Spanish, which means giants.
I saw many children on their father’s shoulder.
It seemed to be a holiday in Barcelona.

Fortunately, I could see Castellers (human towers) !
I was really really impressed and touched with that.
Have you seen this?
This is formed by up to eight or nine levels of people
balancing on the shoulders of the level below.
It is a superb illustration of balance and communal collaboration.
And more, a person who stands on top level is only 5 to 6 years old !
Unbelievable!

Everybody have the racing pulse or sweaty palms when constructing the tower.
The second that is completed, crowded audience gives them tremendous applause.
It was so fantastic.

Barcelona#2

As may be expected of a great architect of 20th century, Gaudi,
many comments have come.
Thank you very much.
You all seem to be interested in his works and Barcelona as well.
So, I’ll show you a couple of photos of Casa Batllo today.

This ceiling and light are suggestive of a shell and sea anemone.
How about you?
(I wanted to avoid a fire smoke detector, if possible…)

This was taken on balcony.
Really beautiful, isn’t it?

This is a window…?
He had a way of making everything organic.
I mean, sure, his great teacher was Nature.

Well, photos of Gaudi’s works are still going on
but please look at my favorite architect’s work.
Yes, his name is Santiago Calatrava.

I did go to see one of his works by metro in early morning.
As I expected, I was the only one who come to see this.
Occasionally local people passed through.
That’s the best part of a bridge spotter.

This bridge is called “Bach de Roda – Felipe II Bridge”.
This is not traversing one like Gateshead Millenium Bridge,
but combination of strait lines and curve lines are fantastic.

If this arch and suspender cable are nothing,
you know, the road would come down.
Conversely, these iron structure support the weight of the road.
It doesn’t look such massive construction, instead, light frame.

I enjoyed very much.

Barcelona#1

To tell the truth, I’ve been to Barcelona, Spain.
It was first time to go to European continent.
The reason I chose Barcelona was to see Gaudi’s works and Santiago Calatrava’s works.
The former is, needless to say, so famous architect that you don’t need to hear my explanation.
The latter is also one of the great Spanish architects, and is still alive.

There are a lot of Gaudi’s works there.
As soon as arriving at hotel, leaving my rucksack, I went to see Casa Batllio.
I put a typical shot of the facade in you can see in post cards.

Barcelona#1_d0031968_6375440.jpg

I’ve never seen such unique design like this.
Of course, I looked around inside.
Every detail has beautiful curve, which just overwhelmed me.
I was in trouble of taking photos because everywhere was amazing and fantastic.

This one was taken from a balcony.
A mosaic made by broken glasses and tiles is also unique character.
I am going to show another photos of Gaudi’s design later.

Barcelona#1_d0031968_622459.jpg

Well, I want to write a little about Caratlava’s work.
The tower of the photo I inserted here yesterday is his work called Montjuic tower.
That was built in 1992 for Barcelona Olympics not only as a symbol but also telecommunication tower.
I didn’t remember when I got interested in his design, but I had really missed that.
Finally, there was in front of my eyes.
Although it was a little tough to stare the tower against the sun, I did.
No one except me is there looking at a beautiful organic form at that time.
That made me really happy.

Barcelona#1_d0031968_6223497.jpg

The bottom part of the tower was amazing.
As you can see, only these three small parts hold whole weight.
I was really impressed about the sense of balance.
However, what made him famous was the design of brides.
I have to go to see his bridge as a bridge spotter.
